Fitting Instructions

Equimat fitting instructions

You will need:

  • Sharp knife
  • Steel metre rule or a straight piece of wood
  • Tape measure
  • Piece of chalk/marker pen

Start fitting the mats from the doorway working toward the back and one side of the stable (so any cuts will be in these areas). When you have laid as many whole mats as you can then it's time to start measuring and cutting. You can fit your mats snug to the wall but please be aware that they can expand and spread (the mats will lift) and you will need to trim them if this happens. We recommend leaving a slight gap (anywhere from ½" to 1" between the edge of the mat and the wall). Always cut the edge of the mat never the central butt join.

Measure the size of the piece required and mark the mat according (measure twice, cut once). Using your straight edge and a sharp knife score along the measured marks. Once this is done lift and bend the mat for final cutting with the knife. Continue until you fitted out the whole stable. For awkward areas you can make up a template with newspaper before cutting the mat.

Once your mats are fitted put down a generous bed (shavings or another absorbent bedding tend to work better than straw). Gradually reduce your bedding over the first week until you reach a level where there is just enough bedding to soak up the wet.

It will be necessary to wash the mats from time to time. You can use a bucket of diluted disinfectant (if it's safe for your horse then it's safe for the mats. Don't use products containing bleach or abrasives) and a broom. Wash the top surface of the mats. If you feel it's necessary to lift the mats to clean underneath always mark the mats and corresponding edges to ensure that they are put back in the same order. Do not leave mats to dry in strong sunlight or leant again a wall for a long period of time (they can distort). Try not to lift and wash the mats too often (the locks tighten up with use and lifting upsets this process). If the mats are dry and clean underneath then they don't need lifting.

Freeweight Rubber & EVA Mats

  • Mats can be trimmed to size using a sharp knife. Take care when cutting the mats and keep fingers etc. Out of the way. We recommend the use of a 1 metre metal ruler with a handle when cutting the mats.
  • For the uncut side of the mat use an edge trim. Available in a range of constrating colours.
  • When using edge trim external corners are available but internal corners should be cut from two straight edges.

  • Take care when lifting and moving the rubber freeweight mats. Each mat weighs approx. 28 Kilos and requires 2 persons to lift.
  • Do not fit rubber freeweight mats directly onto wooden floors (polished, waxed or otherwise), carpeted, vinyl floors or porous surfaces without using a lining/barrier layer. The plasticisers in the freeweight mats can react with these surfaces and cause permanent staining.
  • The freeweight rubber mats may have a white 'blooming' on them when first delivered. This is a temporary result of the water jet cutting process and will wear off in time. Alternatively you can treat them with a rubber dressing or vinyl cleaner (take care to use a product that does not cause the mats to become slippy).

  • For general cleaning use warm soapy water (nothing containing bleach or abrasives) and a mop. Thorough rinse and dry before use.
  • EVA - soft and firm density mats will give off a smell and be slightly slippery for a few days. This is normal.
